Her father was a used car seller. Her mother, a German-born immigrant to the United States since 1958, was born in Germany. Cancer of the breast was diagnosed in the year 1989. Handler died 10 years after battling cancer. Handler was born into the family of a Reform Judaism family. Her father was Jewish. Handler grew up in a safe neighborhood and was a very happy child. As she entered her twenties she moved in Los Angeles in order to pursue acting. In order to support herself, Handler began to work as an actor. Handler took the decision to focus on stand-up comedy after she turned 21 after she realized her story telling abilities. At the beginning of her career Handler began her stand-up profession as part of the Oxygen network, which was an all-female cast on a hidden camera/practical joke reality TV series Girls Behaving Poorly. The show ran between 2002 and 2005. The handler began to appear on various other programs, including Weekends at D.L., The Bernie Mac Show, The Practice and My Wife and Kids.
